HHS DECA Students Visit Volkswagen and
Honigsberg & Duvel Corporation
HHS DECA Students at Honigsberg & Duvel Corporation with Heiko Juerges, President/CEO
On Tuesday, November 22, thirty-one HHS DECA students traveled to The VW Academy and Honigsberg and Duvel in Chattanooga. Students had the unique opportunity to not only tour the VW Academy but also learned a lot about the VW Automotive Mechatronics Program (AMP). They learned that AMP prepares emerging leaders and skilled team members for careers in automotive manufacturing in the Volkswagen Academy and apprenticeship programs around the globe. HHS Marketing Education/DECA is pursuing an apprenticeship program with VW at this time and will publish information as soon as it is available. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high school and colleges around the globe. The Marketing/DECA fit at VW is in the field of management, since Marketing/DECA has a central focus on upper level management and entrepreneurial preparation for students. In addition, the Marketing Education curriculum prepares students for careers in International Business.
Mechatronics is the combination of systems (electrical, mechanical, electronics, computer and controls) in a design useful for manufacturing. Technical Industries need highly skilled team members and technical education is the route to advanced technology skills development. The AMP is based on the VW International Standard for mechatronic apprenticeship. It is 70% hands on and 30% class room. Academy training and VW plant work experience is considered “on the job training”. The AMP consists of Electricity & Electronics, Metalworking & Machining, Hydraulics & Pneumatics, Welding, and Robotics & Automation. The Tennessee Technology Center offers a Tennessee Board of Regents Program, Technical Diploma, 3 year course, 9 trimesters, 4050 hours, tuition and financial aid, grades and attendance, and training at the VW Academy. The benefits of the AMP are: technical skills development preferred VW hiring status, production plant experience, TTC Technical Certificate, VW Certificate, and income during OJT. The average income for a first year employee is approximately $40,000 per year. After the completion of the two year training program, students can transfer to Tennessee Tech to complete the remaining two years for an engineering diploma/certificate.
The second half of this trip was spent having lunch at TGI Fridays, downtown Chattanooga, and at Honigsberg & Duvel Corporation, a comprehensive IT Services and Solutions Company. Heiko Juerges, President/CEO, spoke with our students about his company and international business. In addition to managing his own company, Mr. Juerges also manages H & D’s IT Services at VW Chattanooga, while the remainder of his staff focuses on new business development in the Chattanooga and surrounding area. Both Volkswagen and Honigsberg & Duvel are headquartered in Germany. Mr. Juerges is also a member of the HHS DECA Marketing Education Advisory Board and both H&D Corporation and Volkswagen of Chattanooga are in the process of becoming both Georgia DECA and National DECA Business Partners.
HHS DECA has two students, Audrey Nguyen and Christian Watts, competing in the written state competition event this year, “International Business Plan” and has partnered with Honigsberg & Duvel Corporation to complete this endeavor. They both have aspirations to work for a company like VW.
In addition, HHS DECA has three students, Roger Bennett, Ace Lafaele, and Ryan Kirk, competing in the DECA State Competition Written Event, “Advertising Campaign” and has partnered with Volkswagen to complete this project. DECA State Competition is February 23-25 at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta.
It is not too late to join DECA to benefit from all of the activities and field trips like the one above planned for this school year. Please see Mrs. Jacks in room #1206 or in the The Generals Market during lunch for more information. HHS DECA Students Win Statesman Awards and accomplish new milestones at FLC in Atlanta!
2011 DECA Fall Leadership Conference
On Thursday, October 27th, thirty HHS DECA students traveled to Atlanta to participate in the 2011 DECA Fall Leadership Conference held at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel.
This year proved to be different than previous years for several reasons: more HHS DECA students participated than ever before and HHS DECA achieved awards that had never been accomplished before!
Sixteen students earned the Statesman Award, which recognizes state officers, local officers and local members for mastery of basic DECA information. Students had to score at least 90% on a written-timed test to earn this award.
The following students earned the Statesman Award and were presented with a certificate at the Grand Closing Session for their accomplishment:
Karalina Biddle, Logan Biddle, Tia Blanks, Paul Courtney , Sean Flynn, Kaitlyn Hall, Rachel Hooper, Kandace Kendricks, Ryan Kirk, Ace Lafaele, Natasha Lukashenko, Christian Morgan, Blake Ownbey, Stacia Powell, Russell Tyson, and Ali Watson.
In addition HHS DECA received awards for the following:
1. Ranked 9th Largest Chapter in Georgia
2. 150+ DECA Members
3. “Most Bang for Your Buck” – for donating a theme basket for the Georgia DECA Foundation Drawing - this basket was valued at over $950.00. The Delta Queen Riverboat, a HHS DECA Advisory Board Member made this award a reality by contributing several items and services that were included in the theme basket.
HHS DECA students will now begin actively preparing for competition. Several “written event” projects have been underway for several weeks now and the official sign up for the remaining events will begin on Monday, October 31st in the Generals Market or in room #1206 with Mrs. Jacks. The first level of competition, Region, will be on January 26th in Dalton, GA, followed by State Competition in Atlanta at the Omni Hotel on February 23rd-25th. The International Competition this year will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 28th-May 3rd.
Congratulations students!!!
