Heritage High School
2011-2012 Marketing Education and DECA:
Aspire Higher
What are we doing this year and why should you
be a part of Marketing Education?
Welcome! It has been my pleasure to teach Marketing Education and to be a DECA Advisor for the last nine years in Catoosa County. Prior to teaching, I spent 17 years in marketing and management, where I obtained experience working in technical sales, customer service, managing a publishing company, and marketing surgical procedures/coordinating continuing education seminars to area optometrists. I share the experience and knowledge that I have acquired on a regular basis with my students in both the classroom and as we prepare for DECA competitions. I try to encourage students to look at life as a continual learning experience where each phase of life is a stepping stone into a brand new chapter. The choices and decisions that we make today affect our future in many ways. While we cannot control those things that happen to us in life, we can control how we respond to them. When we approach life with this perspective, each decision that we make becomes an avenue to truly change both our present circumstance as well as implement a strategy that will deliver the results that we want to accomplish. My goal is to provide my students with the tools and the resources that they need so they can be equipped to reach their full potential. When this has been achieved, it will be truly amazing to see what our students can accomplish!
If students have the desire to learn and achieve, it is possible with the right amount of work and passion. This is one of the best times for students to be a part of our Marketing Education Program at Heritage High School. I am very excited about this school year!!! There are several reasons why but I will begin by telling you about one of the most important reasons: We have received our Industry Certification!!! This means that students now have the opportunity to become “credentialed” in Marketing Education. Credentialing means that students who take three marketing classes in one career path, and who take the industry certified test for that pathway, will receive a “special distinction” on their high school transcript. This distinction means that these students have fulfilled all of the national and state competencies for that pathway, which translates into instant credibility when colleges, universities, and potential employers are reviewing transcripts. This is truly an elite group of students and industry both recognizes and rewards for these types of accomplishments.
In addition, we have received all of the products hat we purchased with our Industry Certification Grants. We have completely remodeled The Generals Market, our school based enterprise. Please puruse through this website to see all that we are doing in The Generals Market. We will begin laying the groundwork to begin the process of certifying our school based enterprise soon. I anticipate this process to take at least two years. If you have products that you are interested in selling in the Generals Market, please email or call me. Our consignment accounts receive 90% of the profit per sale!
Last Year’s Success
Last year proved to be a successful year for HHS DECA and Marketing Education! HHS DECA students competed and won top level awards at Region and State Competitions and also earned the right to advance to the DECA International Competition in Orlando, FL in April, where students attended a leadership academy. Each student was presented with a certificate of accomplishment for his/her completion of the program. HHS DECA also continues to be one of the top 25 programs in Georgia with student membership reaching 163.
What’s ahead for this year?
This year promises to be even more exciting with more opportunities for students than ever before. This year, the International DECA Competition (ICDC) will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah! Our national DECA theme this year is “Aspire Higher” and students have already begun to plan and prepare for upcoming field trips, community service projects, fundraisers, and competitions. These experiences have been very rewarding for students in previous years and promise to form memories that will last a life time.
Students choose to join DECA for many reasons. Some join for the trips to area businesses and the friendships that are formed along the way, while others join for the thrill of competition and the excitement, travel, awards, recognition, and potential for scholarship that it brings.
The HHS Marketing Education Program offers the following marketing classes: Marketing Principles, Advanced Marketing, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Fashion Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. Students who wish to concentrate in Marketing Education should begin by taking Marketing Principles. After this prerequisite has been achieved, students may choose any of the other marketing classes he/she would like. Please refer to our Career Path area of this website for more information on the many career path choices available under Marketing Education. This year I am teaching only one career path for Marketing Education and the classes in sequential order are: Marketing Principles, Advanced Marketing, and Entrepreneurship: Building a Business.
In a recent survey of businesses in the state of Georgia, Marketing, along with Aerospace and Engineering were the two top fields that companies expressed a need in further education and training. This interest is a reflection of the demand for jobs in these areas. As a result of this survey, The Georgia Department of Education is in the process of re-engineering Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education to develop curriculum frameworks that align with both industry and colleges/universities. New phases of this process are expected throughout this school year. Please continue to monitor this area of our website as we will be implementing a new section on “careers and salaries/benefits” soon.
This year at HHS we are going to begin to “Aspire Higher” by offering the following "proposed" trips to area businesses: Chattanooga Business Development Center/October TBD, Volkswagon/Chattanooga/November TBD, Snow Mountain Park/Atlanta/January TBD, Belk/Hamilton Place Mall/February TBD, and TN Aquarium/Gatlinburg/March TBD. These trips are all subject to both Administration and Board approval and are therefore subject to change.
To assist with offsetting the costs of both field trips and competitions, we have strategically placed several opportunities for students to be able to fundraise their way to the trip/competition of their choice. They are as follows: Reader’s Digest/World’s Finest Chocolate (TBD), World’s Finest Chocolate (January TBD), and ButterBraid Pastries (February TBD). In addition, we sell Otis Spunkmeyer muffins throughout the entire school year to raise money to help students with travel and related costs for DECA trips. We also hope to use the profitability of our school based enterprise products, such as Frosty Fruit Slushies, to help reduce trip costs for students.
DECA competition is an area that DECA really makes a difference. Students who choose to compete receive so much more than those who do not compete. DECA competition develops skills that cannot be taught or acquired in a classroom setting. Students learn how to communicate when they prepare for a DECA role play and they develop written and verbal communication skills when they choose to compete in a DECA written event, which includes a manual, visual display, and presentation to judges. Since there are so many DECA competitive events to choose from, students can decide whether they prefer a test only event, a test and role play, or a written event. We are already energetically preparing for competition with high hopes and great expectations for our HHS chapter. Our first chance to compete will be on January 26th at Region Competition (Dalton College). State Competition is scheduled for February 23 - 25 at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta, GA and the International Career Development Conference (Competition) is scheduled for April 28 – May 2 in Salt Lake City Utah. Students who are interested in competing this year need to see me (Mrs. Jacks) now so that study materials can be ordered and distributed.
The marketing program of work this year offers a lot of fun and excitement, but it also offers opportunities for students to develop skills that they will use and continue to develop their entire life.
DECA and Marketing Education is the place to “Aspire Higher! Students who are interested in experiencing the difference that Marketing Education and DECA can make should see Mrs. Jacks in room #1206 for more information.
